About UVM

Since 1791, the University of Vermont has worked to advance humankind through education and discovery focused on the health of our societies and on the health of our environment. Campus looks out across one of America’s most vibrant small cities to spectacular Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains beyond. Students’ lives are enriched by UVM’s location in Burlington, a Northeast hub acclaimed for business innovation as well as world-class recreation, and by the dual values of “Freedom and Unity” emanating from Vermont’s landscape and resonating in its motto.

The fifth oldest university in New England, UVM boasts a legacy of important firsts, including first to admit women and African-Americans to Phi Beta Kappa. Today, the university continues to provide students endless ways to challenge ideas, explore the world, and develop skills and networks needed to address the most pressing issues of our time.

Academic Programs with Breadth and Depth

As a land grant university, UVM offers a breadth of opportunities and resources—these include a major academic medical center right on campus and newly constructed STEM facilities housing one of the fastest supercomputers in the country—yet our community is small compared to many national universities and fosters close faculty-student connections.

UVM professors are acclaimed researchers, scholars, and artists who bring new discoveries into their classrooms and engage students in their labs and field research activities around the globe. You’ll find UVM students testing new vaccines at our medical center; studying the effects of climate change aboard the Melosira, our research vessel; furthering the application of nanotechnology; performing alongside Grammy-winning artists; and launching socially responsible start-ups.

Undergraduates have more than 100 majors to choose from, as well as pre-professional tracks including pre-dental, pre-law, pre-med, pre-vet, and pre-PT. Regardless of their chosen major, UVM students take courses across disciplines to expand skills and perspective. Learn more about areas of study at UVM and about each of our 100+ majors.

Graduate Success

UVM's 4-year path for career success builds experience into our students’ education, creating connections that lead to rewarding careers and top graduate school acceptances.

UVM graduates are making discoveries, leading social change, and improving environmental and human health—everywhere. Our most recent three-year average shows that 92 percent have jobs or are continuing their education within six months of graduation. More than 100 have been selected as winners or finalists in the country’s most competitive scholarships, such as the Truman, Fulbright, Udall and Goldwater in the past five years.

Student Life

All first- and second-year students live on campus in one of our ten Learning Communities that match students’ housing to their interests in areas including arts and creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship, leadership and social change, and science-based wellness.

High energy and commitment characterize every aspect of life at UVM. Our 200+ campus clubs and organizations pair with student passions for service, outdoor experiences, arts, community and beyond. Our 18 Division-1 teams, as well as many of our nearly 50 club sports, offer exciting intercollegiate competition, while dozens of intramural options draw students out from every corner of campus to play just for the fun of it.
